NFL Suspends Broncos Defensive End Eyioma Uwazurike Indefinitely for Gambling on Games

The NFL has suspended Denver Broncos defensive end Eyioma Uwazurike indefinitely for gambling on NFL games during the 2022 season. Uwazurike, a fourth-round draft pick from Iowa State in 2022, played in eight games as a rookie.

The league announced the suspension on Monday, saying that Uwazurike had violated the NFL’s gambling policy. Uwazurike can petition for reinstatement no earlier than July 24, 2024.

“We are aware of the NFL’s decision to suspend Eyioma Uwazurike indefinitely,” the Broncos said in a statement. “We take matters pertaining to the integrity of the game very seriously and will continue to cooperate with the NFL’s investigation.”

Uwazurike is the 10th player to be suspended for gambling on NFL games in the past two years. The most recent player to be suspended was Calvin Ridley, who was suspended for a full season in 2022.

The NFL has a strict policy against gambling on NFL games, and players who violate the policy face severe penalties. The league has said that it will continue to take a hard line on gambling violations in order to protect the integrity of the game.

Uwazurike’s suspension is a significant blow to the Broncos, who are looking to improve on their 7-10 record from last season. The 25-year-old was expected to be a key contributor on the defensive line, and his absence will be felt.

It remains to be seen whether Uwazurike will be able to petition for reinstatement and return to the NFL. However, his suspension is a reminder of the serious consequences that can result from gambling on NFL games.
